Now is the time for new Aboriginal tourism ventures across Central Australia

The peak regional tourism authority for Central Australia is urging aspiring Aboriginal  tourism entrepreneurs to  be ready for an expected increase  in both  local and international  visitors over the next few months.

 Tourism Central Australia chief executive Danial Rochford said  reports from  across the  sector  indicate that visitation to the  region  through  this tourist  season will be significant … with   visitors from across the nation with  even  an  uplift in international visitors expected over the next few weeks..

 Speaking  on CAAMA  Radio Mr Rochford urged  local Aboriginal people  interested in becoming involved in new  tourism  ventures to make contact with the  peak tourism bodies.

  • THE Northern Territory has reported the equal highest number of Covid related deaths on a single day following the verification of  2 previous deaths.
  • Western Australia’s largest remote Aboriginal community has been placed into lockdown after multiple positive COVID-19 cases were detected.
  • The prosecution and defence in the Zachary Rolfe murder trial disagree on whether Kumunjayi Walker was restrained and no longer posing a risk to the officers when Constable Rolfe’s second and third shots were fired.

  • There were 864 new cases of Covid-19 were  recorded in the NT on Wednesday   bringing the total number  of active cases to about  5513.
  • Western Australia  recorded a massive spike in cases with 643 new local infections reported.
  • A 51-year-old Karratha man has been charged with numerous offences in relation to an alleged vigilante crime group in the city.
  • Millions of dollars in grants to a fracking company searching for gas in the Beetaloo Basin, have been  re issued…. just months after a federal judge ruled the grants invalid and “legally unreasonable”.

  • A man who passed   away at the Alice Springs Hospital with COVID-19 became the 16th Territorian to die from the virus.
  • The Australian Medical Association has  raised further   concerns  about  conditions in remote  Aboriginal communities where  people  confined to their homes with covid are unable to purchase  power cards needed  to keep essential  services operating.
  • New data  has revealed Northern Territory police  are continuing to use spit hoods on young people…..despite  a 2017 Royal Commission’s describing  the method as “inhumane”.

PM Scott Morrison shares his version of the “Voice to Parliament.” Mparntwe Alice Springs, February 18 – 2022

Prime Minister Scott Morrison was in Alice Springs today where he shared  his version of the Indigenous Voice to Parliament.

Despite not being able to fulfil his promise to enshrine a voice to parliament in this term, Mr Morrison said the government was moving ahead with  local and regional voices ….

The Prime Minister  also announced a new package of over 22 million dollars for Indigenous leadership and governance measures, including a 13.5million funding announcement for the Australian Indigenous Mentoring Experience.

Mr Morrison also says entrepreneurship and investment into local businesses will be a significant factor in enriching First Nations people’s lives in the future.

The Pm also found time to brush up on his newly found welding skills….

· Prime Minister Scott Morrison visited Mbantwe Alice Springs today, announcing a new investment into Indigenous leadership and governance measures, but also spoke on many other issues impacting Aboriginal Territorians lives.

Getting to know Marion……

Marion Scrymgour has lived and worked across the Territory all her life. Raised in Darwin with her 11 siblings and extended family she has cultural links to the Tiwi Islands and Central Australia,

Marion was Member of the NT Legislative Assembly for 11 years, the first Aboriginal  woman in Parliament, the first Minister and the first Aboriginal leader of any Government in Australia when she served as Acting Chief Minister.

She retired from politics at the 2012 election and worked for the Australian Red before returning to Wurli Wurlinjang Aboriginal Corporation as its CEO.

In 2019  Marion became the first woman CEO of any land council in the Northern Territory when she was appointed CEO of the  Northern Land Council.

In  2021 Marion was preselected as the Labor  candidate for the federal seat of Lingiari in the  2022 federal election  after sitting member  Warren Snowden announced he would not stand for re-election.
