Afghan veteran shares his personal journey back from PTSD and finding his place after military service.

In 2001 Andy Fermo enlisted in the regular Army as an Electronic Warfare (EW) operator in Royal Australian Signals Corps.

He later applied and completed the arduous selection process for the Army’s elite Special Forces becoming commando qualified and realising a career goal.

Andy completed two deployments to Afghanistan and was awarded a Special Forces commendation. He was at the pinnacle of his trade and passionate about his future but a series of traumatic events on his second tour including; witnessing the death of a colleague, surviving the impact of a roadside bomb and the major injuries of his colleagues prematurely ended his career and led to his medical discharged in 2010.

He struggled daily to find a passion for a life and career outside the Army and was later diagnosed with PTSD.

This is his story….

The Morrison Government  says  it will more than double the highly successful Indigenous Ranger Program and bring on 2,000 additional ranger jobs in regional and remote Australia as  part of a targeted program to empower Aboriginal people, create jobs, build skills, and unlock the economic potential of Aboriginal land.

 As part of the federal budget… Minister for Indigenous Australians Ken Wyatt  says  the  $636.4 million funding towards the program  will  encourage more Aboriginal women to begin working as rangers on land and sea country as well as fund  long-term economic opportunities and environmental outcomes.

Patrick O’Leary  from The Country Needs People campaign which has been calling on the government to significantly invest in the Indigenous ranger workforce  says the announcement recognises the long term commitment of elders to protect their country

.Both Labor and CLP will be responsible for reducing the number of  Aboriginal  people in territory jails over the next seven years, regardless of who  is in  government . Seven months after the  initial launch of the Aboriginal Justice agreement by the Gunner Labor government Attorney-General Selena Uibo and CLP leader Lia Finocchiaro  have  agreed  to uphold and fund the 48 actions to reduce incarceration.

Covid 19 case numbers in  the Northern territory  have increased slightly  on previous weeks as  the  new  and more infectious subvariant of Omicron gathers pace across the nation .

The Territory recorded  458  new  cases …370 cases were recorded in the Top End region, 24 in Central Australia, nine in East Arnhem, 14 in the Big Rivers region, two in the Barkly and 39 are under investigation.
