Concerns about a deeper digital divide

0

The peak group for the Social and Community Sector in the NT says a significant digital divide is growing within the Northern Territory.

The latest Cost of Living report from the Northern Territory Council of Social Services says there need to be more subsidies to address affordability for broadband services in households with limited incomes.

The report also showed around 25,000 Territorians do not have Internet or mobile access where they live, while some have patchy services.

The author of the report, Jonathon Pilbrow, said free or unmetered access to online services would improve affordability.

He spoke to CAAMA’s Philippe Perez (audio below)

This week on Where You Mob the CAAMA Sports show sits down with CAFL legend Patrick Nandy.

Strong Voices: Fracking announcement a slap in the face of NAIDOC Week’s theme

Earlier this week, the Federal Government announced a grant to help gas corporations frack the Beetaloo Basin. Advocacy group Get up called the announcement an insult to First Nations communities, Traditional Owners and said the public money to help gas companies destroy the land, water, and sacred culturally significant sites.

And the Australian Education Union or AEU say an ICAC investigation into the conduct of a former principal of the Millingimbi School located in remote West Arnham Land stemmed back many years. We hear from the NT Branch Secretary of the AEU on that report.

Also a program designed to empower Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people living with a stroke which has seen success in regional and remote communities in NSW will continue with additional funding from Medical Research Future Fund.
