WA Aboriginal Elders call to withdraw heritage bill

Native title organisations around the country have raised concerns about a draft Aboriginal Cultural Heritage Bill currently before the West Australian McGowan Government.

The alliance of organisations says traditional owners have not been properly consulted in a short five-week consultation period and the bill shouldn’t be presented in its current form.

The alliance, with the support from the National Native Title Council, says that it fails to protect cultural heritage sites and will see further instances of destruction of sacred sites, similar to what happened at Jukkun Gorge in the West Australian Pilbara.

The Chair of the National Native Title Council and Ngalia [en-AH-lia] Traditional Owner Kado Muir spoke to CAAMA’s Philippe Perez about the proposed changes.
