The Federal Albanese Labor government has responded to pleas from Murujuga Traditional custodians and implemented a 30 day pause on construction work at the Burrup urea plant which threatens sacred rock art.
Earlier this month Marduthenera traditional custodian Rayleen Cooper spoke at the United Nations in Geneva about industrial impacts on sacred Murujuga rock art, some of the oldest in the world.
Federal Environment Minister Tanya Plibersek has told Perdaman, the company behind the project to pause any construction work while her office assesses the concerns that have been put to them. Minister for Indigenous Australians Linda Burney toldABC radio she will do her very best to ensure there’s not a repeat of the Juukan Gorge under her watch.
