Ltyentye Apurte skateboarders

Founder of the skateboarding brand, Spinifex Skateboards, Nicky Hayes, and Pro-skater for the Songlines Skateboard team, Kieran Reilly, took to the streets of Ltyentye Apurte and engaged the youth in skateboarding workshops and skateboard painting. Over the course of a week, kids in Ltyentye Apurte learned to skate, assemble skateboards, they painted skateboards and at the end got their hands on some free Spinifex merchandise.

Arrernte man Nicky Hayes says, “Spinifex Skateboard started about two years or three years ago, it was essentially an idea of something I wanted to do for community.”

Dunghutti man Kieran Reilly who mentored some youths in skateboarding during the week, says that the event was a success that that he definitely felt that there was potential in the kids at Ltyentye, he said “who knows, we could see an indigenous kid in the olympics.”
