Speaking in Darwin the Shadow Minister for Indigenous Australians, Linda Burney said an Albanese government will “undo years of Liberal neglect to extend federal funding for housing in Northern Territory homelands and investing in maintenance and upgrades to remote housing across Western Australia, South Australia, Queensland and the Northern Territory.”
Ms Burney said “Labor understands the need to work with First Nations peoples to address overcrowding and run-down housing if it was to be successful in closing the gap and that “Spending on health, education and employment will offer a much bigger return if we also improve access to safe and adequate housing in remote Australia.
With tens of thousands of First Nations Australians living in overcrowded and run-down housing – 62,000 thousand of those in remote and very remote areas, Ms Burney says an Albanese Labor government will commit $100 million to start work immediately on urgent housing and essential infrastructure on Northern Territory homelands. including improvements to water, power and community facilities, housing upgrades, extensions, and new builds.
