National Native Title Council calls for co-designed legislation to protect sacred sites

Extensive recommendations made in a report from the Joint Standing Committee on Northern Australia regarding the destruction of Jukken Gorge has been welcomed by the peak body for the native title sector.

The National Native Title Council says it is the Commonwealth’s responsibility to legislate so that Indigenous heritage is protected.

A transfer of political responsibility for cultural heritage to the Minister for Indigenous Australians Ken Wyatt has also been recommended.
